The other night, an idea came to me for a new segment I could run on the channel: Music Memories. See, in this mini-series, I'd select a song from viewer suggestion and tell a personal story that's linked to it. In return, I'd also invite my viewers to share their stories from said song, or maybe even post other songs that hold similar memories or stories from their lives. The point of it all is to unify people through the music we listen to.
As a DJ at a strip club, part of the fun for me is to connect these young men of roughly around my age with the music from their youths. I know a lot of these songs have significance in their lives, and sometimes finding that music in an unexpected place can be exciting, fun, and inviting. I've seen a group at the stage turn to each other, eyes glowing, while they sing along to some Bowling for Soup or Brand New as the girl on stage breaks out singing along with them. Suddenly...BOOM; there's a bond. Just one small step that brings us all closer as people. Plus, what isn't fun about seeing a beautiful woman strip off clothes to a song you used to have sneaky teen adventures with?
There might be a Puckish sense of mischief still wrought, of fun still being had. For my military demographic, I feel this is an important catharsis. These boys are miles away from home, from family and friends they grew up with. To me, it's like I'm giving them a piece of the lives they left behind. I'm marrying those nostalgic memories with the opportunities of the here and now.
It might seem a bit of a stretch to think about something so small in such terms, but I really feel it's important. Hopefully, translated through my channel, the idea will serve as a humanizing aspect that brings me and my viewers closer to one another, and on another layer, dancers closer to their DJs, and Dancers closer to those that don't.
Music is like food: it has the power to unify. After all, isn't that the whole point of this project?
